Graffiti writing meets letter cutting

The Show Us Your Type – London Exhibition, 2013
Central St Martins College, University of the Arts, London

A total of 78 posters from designers and artists around the world exploring typographic responses to London were displayed in the magnificent atrium at the Central Saint Martins College building in Kings Cross, London.

To accompany the posters, Letter Exchange member, Errol Donald, worked with other members of Letter Exchange (including leading letter cutter Annet Stirling, and calligrapher and sculptor Richard Kindersley), the team from Show Us Your Type, and students from Central Saint Martins to create six large-scale letters on canvass banners to spell the word London. The aim was to see how the more traditional lettering arts combined with graffiti art. We wanted to explore the similarities and try new approaches but above all, promote the merits of the hand-drawn letterform.

Students Isabelle Mattern, Qian Yuan, and Sukmin Ji pooled their typographic skills to design one of the Ns. With Errol’s guidance they transferred their sketch to the canvass and experimented with different spray can techniques.
